Picture a 2002 Miata in a private-party listing. Fresh wax, new tires, a seller who swears it never leaks. The price looks fair. The photos look clean. Then you slide underneath with a flashlight. The frame rails tell another story, and the deal falls apart in the driveway.

That is the NB Miata in 2026. It is the Mazda MX-5, sold as the Miata in North America, in its second generation. It covers the 1999 to 2005 model years. It usually costs less than a clean NA. It also hides its problems better. Fixed headlights and softer curves made it the overlooked Miata for years. That is why good ones still sell at sane money. It is also why bad ones still fool smart buyers.

This guide shows what changed from year to year and which versions deserve a premium. You will see what wears out and what a good one costs. You will also learn a fast inspection routine. Start with what the NB actually is.

Units sold, per Hagerty. The NB is the rarer car.
Why it matters: a third fewer cars sold, then decades of racing and neglect. Clean, original NBs are thinning out faster than the numbers suggest.

The NB is not a clean-sheet car. Hagerty describes it as an NA tub given a thorough working-over. Mazda kept the proportions, the double-wishbone suspension and the rear-drive layout. Then it rewrote almost everything you see and touch.

The pop-up headlights went away. A curvier body arrived, along with an all-new interior and a freer-flowing cylinder head. There was no 1998 model in the U.S. The first American NB is a 1999.

NA Miata with pop-up headlights next to an NB Miata with fixed headlights, front view
The headlights changed, the proportions did not. Underneath, the NB still carries NA DNA.

The name shifted too. According to Wikipedia’s NB entry, North American cars wore the Mazda Miata name from 1999 to 2002. From 2003 to 2005, they became the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Same car, two badges. Enthusiasts call them all NB, and Flyin’ Miata’s code guide uses MSM for the turbocharged Mazdaspeed.

On paper, the numbers stay tiny. Wikipedia lists a curb weight around 2,348 lb and an 89.4-inch wheelbase. That is why the NB still feels like a momentum car. You carry speed through corners instead of blasting out of them.

The NB is also rarer than most people assume. According to Hagerty (Having Trouble Picking the Right Miata? We’ve Got You, 2025), the NB sold 290,123 units against 431,506 for the NA. Fewer cars sold, plus decades of racing and neglect, means clean survivors are thinning out.

Hagerty, how to pick the right Miata

One detail from that same Hagerty guide says a lot. Its author has kept his 2000 NB since 2003. Two decades with one Miata is not nostalgia talking. It is what happens when a car stays cheap to run and fun every single time.

  • VICS variable intake
  • No immobilizer, simpler wiring

NB2, 2001 to 2005

  • Variable valve timing, 10.0:1 compression
  • Stiffer shell, better-bolstered seats
  • New lights, white gauges, immobilizer
  • Bigger Sport brakes, standard from 2003
Read it this way: only 2 hp separate the two engines on paper. The gain lives in everyday torque, so a clean NB1 still beats a tired NB2.

Every NB conversation starts with this split. According to Redline Auto Parts’ NB buyer’s guide, 1999 and 2000 cars are the NB1. The 2001 to 2005 cars are the NB2. The 2001 update was the biggest change of the whole generation.

The NB1: 1999 and 2000

The early U.S. car made 140 hp and 119 lb-ft from its 1.8-liter four. It revved to 7,000 rpm and used a variable intake manifold called VICS. It wears the original 1999 face, before the 2001 restyle.

NB1 electronics are also simpler. Redline notes that NB2 computers added an immobilizer. For a project car or an engine swap, the older wiring can be easier to live with.

The NB2: 2001 to 2005

For 2001, Mazda added variable valve timing, a revised head and 10.0:1 compression. Peak output only rose to 142 hp. The real gain came lower in the rev range, where the car feels noticeably more willing around town.

The rest of the update was just as useful. New headlights, bumpers and taillights changed the face. Inside came new seats, door panels and white-faced gauges. OnAllCylinders’ year-by-year guide adds that the chassis got stiffer and the seats gained better bolstering.

Red NB1 Miata and gray NB2 Miata parked side by side, front view
Left, the early face. Right, the 2001 update with sharper lights and a VVT engine under the hood.

Bigger Sport brakes and 16-inch wheels became optional in 2001. From 2003, Redline notes, both became standard on every Miata.

The honest verdict

For most buyers, the NB2 is the better car to live with. The broader torque, firmer seats and stiffer shell all show up on a normal drive. Pick an NB1 if you love the original face or want simpler electronics for a build. Condition still beats model year every time.

Trims, Gearboxes and the Limited-Slip Question

The badge does not tell you the diff

NB option sheets are a maze. Two cars from the same year can drive very differently, depending on the packages ticked at the dealer. Knowing the trims keeps you from paying for hardware a car does not have.

Base, LS and the packages that matter

For 1999, Mazda sold one car with option packages. The Sports Package brought Bilstein shocks, a front strut brace and a Torsen limited-slip differential. For 2000, Redline explains, Mazda added the better-equipped LS alongside the base car.

Miata rear differential removed from the car, aluminum case open showing the limited-slip unit
What the badge never tells you: the unit inside this case.

The LS came with leather, Bose audio and the Torsen on manual cars.

The base car could get a Suspension Package with Bilsteins, the brace and the LSD. Hunt for those packages if you care about driving feel.

Five-speed, six-speed or automatic

The five-speed manual was standard all the way through. A six-speed first appeared in the special editions, then became an option on the LS from 2001. A four-speed automatic was also offered, and it changes the car more than any trim level does.

Which NB Miatas have a limited-slip differential

This is one of the most searched NB questions, and the answer depends on year and gearbox:

  • 1999 to 2002: the optional LSD was a Torsen, fitted only to manual cars with the right package or trim.
  • 2003 to 2005: Mazda switched regular cars to a Tochigi-Fuji unit, per Redline.
  • Mazdaspeed: the only NB with a Torsen after 2002, with a 4.1 ratio and larger axles.
  • Automatics: Redline lists the Torsen as a manual-transmission item, so plan on an open differential.

How to confirm an LSD before you pay

Do not trust the listing or the badge. With the car safely supported and both rear wheels off the ground, put it in neutral. Turn one rear wheel by hand. If the other wheel spins the opposite way, the differential is open. If it turns the same way, you have a limited-slip.

Market reality: Hagerty sees a real premium for the 10th Anniversary. Most other special editions trade like nice NBs with a story.

Mazda loved a one-year special edition, and the NB got plenty. Some are genuinely special. Others are mostly paint and trim. Hagerty’s guide is blunt here. Outside the 10th Anniversary, the market pays little extra for most of them.

The special editions worth knowing

  • 1999 10th Anniversary: Sapphire Blue Mica, a numbered badge out of 7,500 cars, the six-speed and a 3.9 Torsen. Hagerty notes it commands a bit more than the average NB.
  • 2000 Special Edition: Mahogany Mica paint over a Parchment interior, with Nardi wood trim and the six-speed.
  • British Racing Green Special Edition: the color returned early in the NB2 years, a nod to the famous NA.
  • 2003 Club Sport: a run of 50 stripped track cars, per Hagerty, with no power steering and no air conditioning.
  • 2003 Shinsen: another limited 2003 edition that still turns up in auction listings.

These cars reward buyers who want something different at a Cars and Coffee.

Just price them as nice NBs with a story, not as blue-chip collectibles.

The Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata: the factory turbo NB

The Mazdaspeed is the one NB that changes the performance conversation. According to Mazda USA (2004 MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata Technical Specifications, 2004), its turbocharged 1.8 made 178 hp and 166 lb-ft. That was 25 and 33 percent more than the regular Miata. It is still the quickest NB Mazda ever sold here.

Mazda USA, 2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata spec sheet

The hardware went well beyond boost. Redline lists a six-speed with shot-peened gears, the Torsen with bigger axles and specific Bilstein shocks. It rode on 17-inch wheels. The engine was based on the older non-VVT block, not the NB2 unit.

Production stayed small. DrivingLine reports roughly 5,400 cars, with the run cut short by a fire at the production facility. The same review notes the Mazdaspeed reached 60 mph about 1.5 seconds quicker than the base car.

Buy one for originality first. Check for boost upgrades, non-stock tunes and the full service history of the turbo. A stock, documented car is worth waiting for.

5Bushings and shocksA vague, floaty car
Bargaining chips, not deal breakers. Every item here is fixable on a budget. The one that is not has its own section below.

The NB‘s reputation for toughness is earned. The engine and gearboxes take high mileage in stride with basic care. What fails now is age: rubber, plastic and parts that cooked for twenty-plus summers.

Hagerty’s checklist for early Miatas applies to the NB, minus the early NA crank issue. Here are the wear items worth checking on any car you view:

  • Radiator: if the plastic tank has turned brown, replace it before it fails on you.
  • Soft top and drains: a tired top leaks, and blocked drains send water where it should not go.
  • Timing belt records: ask when it was last done, with receipts, not a verbal promise.
  • Ignition parts: coils and plug wires age, and misfires often show up cold.
  • Suspension: worn bushings and old shocks make an NB feel vague and floaty.

A reader who owned an NB once wrote to us after buying a car that looked perfect. Three weeks later, it started misfiring on cold mornings. The cause was tired ignition coils. It was a cheap fix, but the panic was real. Knowing the list beforehand turns a scare into a routine repair.

Gray 2001 NB Miata with the hood open and an OBD scan tool connected to diagnose a cold-start stumble
Cold misfires on an NB often trace back to tired coils or plug wires, a cheap fix once found.

None of these items should scare you off a good car. They are bargaining points. The one problem that can make an NB worthless is the next section.

Rust: The Problem That Decides Whether an NB Is Worth Buying

3

Where NB Miatas rot

Three zones decide the purchase. Everything else is negotiation.

A B C A, frame railsB, rockers

Rust Belt history

Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New England. Salted winters eat NB structures. Fresh undercoating deserves suspicion.

Sun Belt history

Arizona, Southern California. A dry-state car can stay solid at high miles. Worth paying extra and shipping.

Zone C, top drains

Clogged drains trap water in the body. It works from the inside out, long before bubbles show.

1Frame rails ahead of the control arms
2Rockers in front of each rear wheel
3Rear arches and trunk floor
4Magnet test on suspect areas
5Question any lone fresh coating

Mechanical faults cost hundreds. Structural rust can cost more than the car. That is why rust decides the purchase, and everything else is negotiation.

Where NB Miatas rot

Hagerty points to two areas first. The front frame rails rust just forward of the suspension arms. Hagerty says they can be repaired, but the job is pricey. The second zone is the rocker panels ahead of the rear wheels.

Green NB Miata on jack stands with a rocker panel rusted through
By the time rust breaks through a rocker, the structure behind it is usually worse.

Clogged top drains feed both problems. Water that cannot escape sits in the body and works from the inside out. By the time bubbles show on the outside, the metal underneath is often worse.

This case shows up in public owner threads. On the Grassroots Motorsports forum, a 1999 NB went in for upgraded sway bar mounts. The shop found structural rot instead. It only came to light because the car was already up in the air.

Why the state a car lived in matters

In the U.S., rust is largely a geography story. Road salt in the Rust Belt, think Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania or New England, eats NB structures. A car that spent its life in Arizona or Southern California can be solid at 150,000 miles.

Always ask where the car lived, not just where it is listed. A clean title history across Sun Belt states is worth real money. Fresh undercoating on a northern car deserves suspicion, not relief.

The ten-minute flashlight crawl

This is the single most valuable check you can do. Bring a flashlight, a mat and a small magnet:

  1. Start at the front. Look along both frame rails, just ahead of the lower control arms.
  2. Move to the rocker panels. Focus on the section right in front of each rear wheel.
  3. Check the rear wheel arches and the trunk floor for bubbling or fresh patches.
  4. Test suspicious areas with the magnet. Filler and thick coatings do not hold it well.
  5. Look for fresh undercoating or paint in only one area. Ask why it is there.

If the seller refuses to let you look underneath, walk. A good NB owner expects that request.

The NB is no longer a $2,000 car. It is not yet an NA-style collectible either. It sits in between, and that gap is where smart buyers live.

Auction data gives the clearest picture. According to CLASSIC.COM (Mazda MX-5 Miata NB 2nd Gen Market, 2026), the average NB sale price stands at about $13,000, with 10th Anniversary cars around $14,000 and the Mazdaspeed around $15,500. These figures move as new sales are logged, and they skew toward cars clean enough to reach auction.

CLASSIC.COM, NB Miata market data

Hagerty’s own read of the market lines up. According to Hagerty (Having Trouble Picking the Right Miata? We’ve Got You, 2025), around $10,000 buys a good driver-quality NB. Top-flight examples hover near $26,000, and near $31,000 for Mazdaspeeds. The spread between a driver and a show car is huge.

Hagerty, NB values within its Miata buying guide

What moves the price of an NB Miata for sale

A rust-free structure is the first driver of value. After that come a manual gearbox, a stock or tastefully modified spec and documented maintenance. Special editions add a little. Automatics, salvage titles and cheap modifications pull prices down fast.

Green NB Miata parked on a country road with a for sale sign in the window
The asking price is a starting point. The underside decides what the car is worth.

A buyer hesitating between two NBs once explained his logic to us. He picked the cheaper one because it looked better. Within six months, rust repairs and a new top had eaten the savings. On an NB, an unusually low price almost always hides a reason.

The pattern behind the NB questions we receive is rarely a lack of information. It is the gap between the car a buyer imagines and the car the market offers at that budget. Close that gap before you drive anywhere.

Buying an NB Across State Lines: Titles, Inspections and Recalls

No national rule

Three checks before you buy a car from another state

TX

No safety inspection for private cars since January 1, 2025. Emissions tests remain in the big metro counties.

CA

Every NB falls under Smog Check, which covers gasoline cars from 1976 on. Expect a test at sale and every two years.

Any state

NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup is federal and free. Read the title for any salvage or rebuilt brand.

Your state may differ from both. Check your DMV before you commit, especially for an out-of-state or right-hand-drive import.

The best NB for sale may be three states away. That is often the right call for a rust-free car. It also means paperwork rules you have never dealt with.

Check the title before you fall in love

A salvage or rebuilt brand usually stays in the car’s title history. It hurts resale and can complicate insurance. Confirm the title status and the state it was issued in before you make an offer. A clean title on a pricier car beats a salvage bargain.

Inspections and emissions depend entirely on the state

There is no national rule here. Two big Miata markets show how wide the gap is.

In Texas, the Department of Public Safety ended safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Emissions tests still apply in the big metro counties, including Harris, Dallas, Travis and El Paso.

In California, the Bureau of Automotive Repair requires Smog Checks for gasoline cars from model year 1976 and newer. Every NB qualifies. Expect a check at sale and every two years at registration. Buying an out-of-state NB into California means planning for that test.

VIN and paint code label on a car's door jamb
Match this label to the title and the listing before any money changes hands.

Check your own state’s DMV before you commit. Registering a car that fails local emissions can turn a bargain into a headache.

Run the VIN for open recalls

Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup tool before you buy. It takes one minute. NHTSA’s 2024 Takata do-not-drive alert for Mazda listed other models, not the Miata. A VIN check still costs nothing and settles the question for that exact car.

Insurance and imported Mazda Roadsters

Collector-style policies from specialists like Hagerty are worth a quote. Eligibility rules vary by insurer and by how you use the car, so ask before you buy. A daily driver may not qualify.

You may also see right-hand-drive Mazda Roadsters in U.S. listings. That is the Japanese-market NB, legal to import once a car is 25 years old. Titling rules for these imports vary by state, so check locally first.

Three Mistakes That Cost NB Buyers Money

Mistake 1, the costliest

The odometer is not the condition report

40,000 mi Ohio, outside 150,000 mi Arizona, garaged Often the better buy

Storage and records predict rust and dried rubber. Mileage alone predicts almost nothing on a 20-year-old roadster.

Mistake 2: cheap coilovers

No-name kits ruin the ride. Racing Beat, 949 Racing and Flyin’ Miata are a different story.

Mistake 3: the automatic as a bargain

Four speeds blunt a modest engine, and the Torsen was never offered with it.

Common thread: none of these cars is bad. Each mistake is a misreading of what the listing actually shows.

The same errors come back again and again. None of them is about the car being bad. All of them are about reading the car wrong.

Mistake 1: paying for low miles instead of good storage

A 40,000-mile NB that sat outside in Ohio for fifteen years can be worse than a 150,000-mile Arizona car. Mileage says little about rust or dried-out rubber. Storage and maintenance history say much more.

Mistake 2: buying cheap modifications

Hagerty warns that no-name coilover kits went on many early Miatas during their $2,000-car years. Bad coilovers ruin the ride and can hide worn mounts.

Green NB Miata on jack stands with worn and new suspension control arms laid out for comparison
Budget suspension ages fast. Quality parts and fresh bushings transform how an NB drives.

Quality brands are a different story. Hagerty names Racing Beat, 949 Racing and Flyin’ Miata as makers of excellent parts.

Mistake 3: treating the automatic as a cheap way in

An automatic NB is often cheaper, and there is a reason. The four-speed blunts an already modest engine. It also never came with the Torsen, according to Redline’s option lists. Unless you truly need two pedals, the manual is worth the premium.

NB Miata Hardtop and Soft Top: What to Know Before You Pay

Two roofs, two checks

The roof is one of the priciest surprises on an NB

Soft top Glass rear window Factory hardtop Same part fits NA and NB

Swipe sideways to see the full drawing

Soft top checklist

  • Seams and stitching along the rear window
  • Latches that close without force
  • Drains clear, carpet dry to the touch
  • LS from 2003: cloth instead of vinyl

Hardtop reality

  • Racers bought many, clean ones are scarce
  • Worth real money, price it into the deal
  • Keep it with the car if it came with one
  • No folding hard roof on any NB

The roof is one of the most expensive surprises on an NB. It deserves its own check.

The soft top

The NB top came with a glass rear window from the start, per Redline, a big step up from plastic. From 2003, the LS switched from vinyl to a cloth top, per Redline. Check seams, latches and the rear window area. Then check the drains again, because a bad top and a clogged drain rot a car together.

The factory hardtop

Hagerty notes that the same factory hardtop fits NA and NB cars. Racers bought many of them, so clean ones are hard to find and worth good money. If a car comes with one, factor it into the price, and keep it with the car.

Close-up of a gray hardtop fitted to an NB2 Miata in the rain
A clean factory hardtop is scarce and worth real money. Keep it with the car.

If what you really want is a hard roof that folds away at a button, the NB never offered that. Mazda added a folding hardtop on the NC, then evolved the idea into the retractable-fastback Miata RF.

  • The NB is your car if you want a light, analog roadster with deep parts support and track-day potential.
  • Look elsewhere if pop-up headlights are the dream, or if you need modern safety tech and daily comfort.

The NB versus NC dilemma comes up often in reader messages. On paper, the NC is stiffer, stronger and more modern. The NB is lighter and more direct. Neither car is wrong. The right one depends on what you want to feel on a Sunday drive.

There is also a new-car argument worth knowing. According to Hagerty (The Base Price of Every Miata, Adjusted for Inflation, 2026), the first two generations peaked above $39,000. That is in today’s dollars. A new ND has been cheaper than every previous Miata since 2022. The NB‘s case is character and cost of entry, not value against new.

Your Most Common Questions About the NB Miata

Does the NB Miata have ABS or traction control?

ABS was available on the NB, but as an option or package item, so many cars do not have it. Check the dashboard warning lights at startup, and look for the ABS unit under the hood. Traction and stability control were never part of the U.S. NB. That keeps the car simple, but it asks for more care in wet weather on worn tires.

Do NA Miata parts fit an NB?

Many do. Redline explains that Mazda kept many NA chassis dimensions and bolt locations. As a result, NA and NB parts interchange more than the styling suggests. Suspension and brake upgrades often cross over. Body panels, interior pieces and engine electronics usually do not. Always confirm fitment by year before ordering, because NB1 and NB2 differ too.

Is an NB a good first track car?

It is one of the best starting points there is. The NB Miata is light on brakes and tires, so consumables last and costs stay sane. Start with good pads, fresh high-temperature brake fluid and quality tires before any power mods. Add a proper seat and harness setup only when your track organization allows it. Learn the car stock first. It teaches momentum driving better than faster cars.

Will a tall driver fit in an NB?

Better than in an NA. A driver around six foot one can usually get comfortable with the seat all the way back. Past about six foot three, headroom gets tight, especially with the hardtop on. Sit in the exact car before buying, with the top up. Seat condition matters too, since flattened foam changes your seating height in ways listings never mention.

Will NB Miata values keep rising?

Hagerty notes that NB values have lagged the NA’s rise but track relatively closely. That suggests clean, original cars should keep firming up as good ones disappear.
