Saturday, 8 a.m., a gas station parking lot. Twenty Miatas idle in a loose line, tops already down. Someone hands out route sheets. Nobody asks which generation you drive.
Scenes like this play out on weekends across the country. Yet finding the club behind them is oddly hard. Directories are dated. Club websites vary widely in how current they are. Google even mixes in dealer listings for the Club trim of the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
This guide sorts it out. You will see what a Miata club really is today. You will see what members do and what it costs. Then you will learn how to join one without wasting a season. A regional club finder sits further down the page, checked club by club.
In short
A Miata club is a volunteer-run local car club for Mazda MX-5 Miata owners. US clubs organize drives, monthly meetings, tech sessions and sometimes autocross. Annual dues in the clubs listed on this page run from $20 to $40. Many welcome visitors at events before they join. The national Miata Club of America is gone, and regional clubs carry on independently.

From one national club to many local ones
How the US Miata club scene took its shape
1989
Indy Miata Club is founded in October, months after the car’s debut.
1990
BAMA, Southern California and Lone Star clubs are all founded in 1990.
Chapters
Miata Club of America sanctions regional chapters. Puget Sound is the first approved.
Today
The national club is gone. Former chapters run on as independent local clubs.

Search tip: add “car club” or your city to your search to skip dealer listings for the trim.
A Miata club is a local group of owners built around one car. Members share drives, meals, tech knowledge and a calendar. Most are run by volunteer officers.
Many clubs are formal organizations. Indy Miata Club is a registered 501(c)(6) nonprofit. Southern California Miata Club is a California mutual benefit corporation. Windy City Miata Club describes itself as a not-for-profit. The structure keeps the club alive when the founders step back.

The size of the owner base explains why so many clubs exist. According to the Mazda USA Newsroom (Mazda Produces One-Millionth Mazda MX-5, 2016), production hit one million units. That milestone came on April 22, 2016. A car built in those numbers leaves a lot of owners looking for company on a Saturday morning.
From one national club to independent local clubs
When the car launched, enthusiasts created the Miata Club of America. The national club then sanctioned regional chapters to run local events. Puget Sound Miata Club in Washington says it was the very first chapter approved.
The national club later shut down. Several chapters simply dropped the “chapter of” from their names and kept driving. Puget Sound did exactly that, and it still runs today.
That history shapes the landscape you search today. There is no national umbrella to join. You join a regional club, and each one sets its own dues, rules and calendar. Some date back to the very start. Indy Miata Club was founded in October 1989, the Bay Area Miata Association in April 1990.
Not the same thing as the Miata Club trim
Search “Miata Club” and many results are dealer listings. That is a trim level, not a car club.
The trim sits in the middle of the range. According to Mazda USA (2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata model page, 2026), the 2026 Club starts at $34,230 MSRP. That places it between the Sport at $30,730 and the Grand Touring at $36,030. Prices exclude the $1,315 destination charge. It adds Bilstein dampers, 17-inch wheels and a Bose audio system.
Owning a Club trim does not make you a member of anything. And you do not need one to join a car club. A tired 1990 NA is just as welcome in the parking lot.
What Miata club members actually do
One club year
About one outing a month, shaped by the seasons
Example: BAMA averages 12 drives or events a year.
- SpringSeason-opening drives and planning meetings.
- SummerLong runs, parades, car shows, autocross.
- FallFall color tours close the driving season.
- WinterHoliday parties and indoor meetups. Some clubs pause meetings.
2 to 4 h
Typical local run, meal included (Lone Star)
4 h +
Regional run, sometimes with an overnight stay
3 days +
Extended trips at clubs like Mass Miata
Club life follows the seasons. Calendars fill up in spring and wind down with the fall color tours. Windy City Miata Club’s October 2026 calendar shows the typical mix. It lists fall color tours, a car care clinic, a coffee meetup and a monthly meeting.
Drives, runs and tours
The drive is the core of most clubs. Lone Star Miata Club describes its local runs as two to four hours around Dallas and Fort Worth. They usually end at a meal or a point of interest.
Regional runs go further. Lone Star’s regional runs last more than four hours, and some members stay overnight. Mass Miata Club plans day trips, weekends and extended trips of three days or more.

Who plans them? Usually ordinary members. At Mass Miata Club, events are originated and run by individual members, not by a central committee. That is why calendars vary so much from one club to another.
Frequency is a fair question before you pay dues. According to the Bay Area Miata Association (What is BAMA and Why a Membership Fee?, 2026), the club averages 12 events a year. That works out to roughly $2 per event on a $25 membership. For an active club, about one outing a month is a realistic expectation.
Meetings, tech days and the social side
Between drives, clubs meet. Big Apple Miata Club holds monthly meetings on Long Island, with a winter break. San Diego Miata Club gathers its members once a month at a restaurant in Poway.
Tech sessions are the hidden value. Windy City Miata Club puts a car care clinic on its October 2026 calendar. Big Apple even names two tech advisors on its board.
For the owner of a 30-year-old NA, that matters. An afternoon beside someone who has already replaced a clutch beats any forum thread. The knowledge is local, and it comes with a jack stand.
The social side is not an afterthought. Holiday parties, ice cream runs and parades fill many calendars. Lone Star Miata Club regularly drives in the Texas Independence Day Parade in Austin.
Autocross and track time
Some clubs go faster. Windy City Miata Club runs its own autocross program, with published rules and a FAQ. Big Apple members combine touring with autocross and other activities.
Other clubs keep the calendar social and leave track work to dedicated organizers. Neither model is better. What matters is knowing which one you are joining, which is where most new members go wrong.
How much does it cost to join a Miata club?

per year on Mass Miata’s five-year plan, the cheapest rate found. Peak to Peak’s $40 covers a whole household.
The clubs checked for this guide charge between $20 and $40 a year. Some price dues per car, some per household, and a few sell multi-year plans. Volunteers run them, which keeps dues low.
Multi-year plans push the cost down further. According to Mass Miata Club (Join the Mass Miata Club, 2026), one year costs $30. Two years cost $45, and five years $90. All options rose by $5 on July 1, 2026. The five-year plan works out to $18 a year.
Where your dues actually go
BAMA publishes an unusually clear breakdown. As a nonprofit, the club must carry liability insurance. It also pays state registration and filing fees, plus website upkeep.
Events cost money too. Venue fees for the holiday party come out of dues. So do the custom trophies handed out at the members-only car show.
What you get back
Sponsor discounts often repay the dues on their own. Mass Miata Club lists dealer and service-shop sponsors that give active members discounts on parts and service. San Diego Miata Club mentions vendor discounts, including participating Mazda dealerships.

Other benefits are harder to price. BAMA lists group photo shoots by professional photographers and occasional free club gear. The real return is simpler: a standing reason to take the car out.
How to find a Miata club near you
Interactive tool
Miata club finder by region
No single official list covers every club. Plan on cross-checking two or three sources before you settle. These are the three that work best.
- The Miata.net club directory. It is organized by region. Check the "Last updated" line on each page, since some regional lists are several years old.
- Moss Motoring's club list and club sites themselves. Moss sorts clubs by state with direct links. Clubs also point to each other: BAMA keeps an "Other Miata Clubs" page.
- Your Mazda dealer and local coffee meets. Many clubs count Mazda dealers among their sponsors, as Mass Miata does. Windy City even hosts its own "Miatas and Coffee" mornings.

Once you have a name, judge the website by one thing: the events calendar. A calendar with dates in the coming weeks means a living club. An events page stuck two years back usually means the opposite.
Every club in the finder above was checked on its own website in October 2026. The list is a starting point, not a census, and each region links to a fuller directory.

Joining takes an afternoon. The order matters more than the paperwork, so follow these steps in sequence.
- Go to one event before you pay. Peak to Peak Miata Club welcomes non-members at any event, even people without a Miata. Windy City says new and prospective members are always welcome.
- Read the dues model. Big Apple charges per car, per year. Peak to Peak charges per household. Mass Miata Club sells one-, two- and five-year plans.
- Send the application. Some clubs take online payment, as Mass Miata does through PayPal. Others still work by mailed form and check, like MidState Miata Club of New York.
- Expect a trial period at some clubs. Big Apple Miata Club lets new members wait 90 days before paying their dues.
- RSVP and learn the run rules. Some Windy City events require an RSVP to the organizer. Mass Miata Club publishes trip guidelines for every outing.

Renewal dates catch people out. MidState Miata Club of New York collects dues on May 1 and removes unpaid members after May 15. Put the date in your calendar the day you join.
Any generation is welcome, including yours
Four generations, one parking lot
Every US model year since 1990 fits a club roster
NA
1990 to 1997
NB
1999 to 2005
NC
2006 to 2015
ND
2016 to today
Band widths follow the number of US model years. There was no 1998 model year in the US.
Soft top
All four generations. The classic club car.
PRHT
Power retractable hardtop, offered on the NC.
RF
Retractable fastback, ND only, since the 2017 model year.
Mass Miata's form: 1990 to 2030 model years
3 transmissions
3 roof types
Clubs care that you drive the car, not which one you drive. Mass Miata Club's application lists every model year from 1990 onward. It offers three transmissions and three roof types: soft top, PRHT and RF.
That covers the whole family. The original NA Miata belongs here as much as any new car. So does the second generation, from the early NB Miata to the facelifted NB2.
The third generation brings its own crowd. The NC Miata was the first to offer a power retractable hardtop. The current ND adds a coupe-roofed variant, the Miata RF, which clubs list alongside the soft top.

Mixed lineups are the norm. A 1990 NA parked next to a 2026 RF is not an exception at a club meet. It is the whole point.
Textbook case: a buyer torn between an NA and an NB attends two club runs before buying anything. Both generations are in the lot. In one morning, the buyer sits in both, hears both idle and asks owners what broke. That beats a week of reading spec sheets.
Before your first run
Still choosing what to bring to your first run? Start with the two oldest generations, head to head.
Three mistakes new club members make
Mistake, then fix
Three traps, three quick corrections
Mistake
Joining the closest club without reading its calendar.
Fix
Ask what the club does: touring, autocross, social.
Mistake
Taking an unchecked car on a four-hour run.
Fix
Check tire age, fluids, wipers and the roof the week before.
Mistake
Treating tech days as a free repair shop.
Fix
Take the help, then host one drive a year.
All three mistakes come from the same gap: joining a club before knowing what it does.
Joining is easy. Joining the right club, with the right car and the right expectations, takes a little more thought. These three mistakes come up again and again.
1. Picking a club on distance alone
The nearest club is the obvious choice. It is not always the right one, because clubs differ more in style than in location.
Profile type: a new ND2 owner joins the closest club, hoping for autocross. The calendar turns out to be brunch drives and parades. Nothing is wrong with the club. The mismatch came from one unasked question: what does this club actually do?
Size changes the experience as much as style. According to Windy City Miata Club (club homepage, 2026), the club counts over 300 members and over 200 Miatas. Members come from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and beyond. A club that size can fill a busy calendar. A smaller one trades variety for a tighter group.
MX5Global's view: the best club is rarely the biggest or the closest. It is the one whose calendar matches how you actually want to drive.
2. Showing up with a car that is not ready for the run
A four-hour regional run is not a trip to the grocery store. Old tires, a weeping hose or a tired battery surface far from home.
Classic scenario: an NB owner joins a long fall run with the original soft top. Rain arrives at the halfway stop. The rear window seam lets water in, and the drive home becomes a lesson in towels.

Check the basics the week before: tire age, fluid levels, wipers and the roof. On older cars, the top deserves special attention. Our guide to the NB Miata soft top covers leaks, drains and replacement options.
3. Treating the club as a free garage
Tech days are generous, and members love to share what they know. But a club is not a repair shop, and everyone there is a volunteer.
Clubs survive on members who give back. Peak to Peak Miata Club openly asks members to volunteer as drive hosts. In his September 2026 message, Windy City's president asked members to step up as president, secretary and newsletter editor.
The fair deal is simple. Take the help, then host one drive a year. That single route keeps the calendar full for everyone, including you.

Planning for 2027? Check each event's own site, since venues and formats change often.
Local runs fill most weekends, but some events pull clubs from several states. One of the best known is Miata Reunion in California. It mixes track time, a large Miata car show, local drives and a vendor area.
Laguna Seca has a long Miata history. In 2016, Mazda planned the US tour of its one-millionth MX-5 to end at the annual Miatas at Mazda Raceway event there.

The 2026 edition ran September 18 to 20 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. It took place inside the Gridlife Laguna festival, with registration through the Reunion's own portal.
Clubs turn events like this into convoys. BAMA lists access to special events, such as Miata Reunion, among its membership benefits. Northern clubs posted the 2026 dates on their own calendars months in advance.
Regional gatherings fill the rest of the year. Lone Star Miata Club promotes the 2026 Texas Miata Roundup. Mass Miata Club holds a yearly Miata show at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline.
Formats and venues for these events change often. For 2027 dates, check each event's own site rather than last year's forum posts.

What you need: a free Saturday and a Miata that starts.
A Miata club asks for very little. Modest dues, a free Saturday and a car that starts. In return, you get roads you would never find alone and people who know your car.
Start with the finder above. Pick one event, show up and ask what the club really does. If the answer fits how you drive, sign up that same day.

No Miata yet?
No Miata in the garage yet? Club runs are a great reason to start looking. Here is how to find a solid second-generation car without overpaying.
Your most common questions about Miata clubs
Can I join a Miata club in another state?
Yes. Club boundaries are informal, and dues rarely depend on where you live. Windy City Miata Club is based around Chicago, yet counts members in Wisconsin, Indiana and other states. Distance matters more than borders. A club two hours away works if you enjoy the drive to the start point. For weekly meetups, a closer club makes more sense. Nothing stops you from joining two clubs, one local and one with a bigger calendar.
Can my partner join on the same membership?
Often, yes. Several clubs price by household or let you add a co-member. Peak to Peak Miata Club charges $40 a year per household. Mass Miata Club's application includes a dedicated co-member section, with a separate name badge. Big Apple Miata Club, by contrast, prices dues per car, per year. Read the dues line carefully, and ask the membership coordinator before paying twice for the same car.
Is an automatic Miata welcome at club events?
Yes. Clubs welcome the car, whatever the gearbox. Mass Miata Club's application lists the 5-speed, the 6-speed and the automatic as standard choices. On a touring run, it changes nothing, since everyone follows the same posted route. Autocross and track events are a different matter. If those are your goal, ask the club which events suit your car before you sign up for one.
Is Mazda's Owner's Club the same thing?
No. Mazda USA's Owner's Club lives inside the MyMazda app and offers badges and exclusive content. It is a digital program run by the manufacturer. A Miata club is an independent group of owners who drive together. You can use both without any conflict. The app will never plan a Saturday run, and a local club will never award you a digital badge.
What if there is no Miata club near me?
Start one, small. Many clubs began with a handful of owners. San Diego Miata Club was founded in 1996 by just eleven Miata owners. Post a meetup in a regional group, then pick a coffee shop and a short route. Peak to Peak Miata Club runs on volunteer drive hosts and publishes drive ideas to help them. Once a group meets regularly, dues and officers can come later.
Can a Miata club help me buy a car?
Indirectly, and often well. Clubs run their own classifieds. Indy Miata Club hosts a classified ads forum, and BAMA keeps a For Sale page. A car sold inside a club often comes with a history you can ask other members about. Some clubs also name tech advisors, as Big Apple does. Ask whether one could look at a car with you before you buy.
