Miata Price in 2026: Sticker, Real Cost and Price History

The ad says $30,730. Your bank statement will say something else.

That gap can catch a first-time Miata buyer off guard. The sticker is real. It is just not the price you pay. Destination, sales tax, paint and dealer fees all land on top. Each one depends on your trim and your state.

This page builds the real Miata price, line by line. You will see every 2026 trim of the Mazda MX-5 Miata and what each add-on costs. You will see how your state changes the total. You will see what a new Miata cost in every era since 1990. And what one is worth five years later. Start with the sticker, because that is where budgets start to drift.

In short

A new 2026 Miata starts at $30,730 for the Sport, per Mazda USA (October 2026). A $1,315 destination charge comes on top. The RF hardtop runs from $38,750 to $42,200. Sales tax and fees then depend on your state. Adjusted for inflation, Hagerty finds a new ND has been cheaper than every earlier Miata since 2022.

This page covers what a Miata costs new and how its price has moved over time. For used prices by generation, see our used Miata buying guide.

Read it this way: the four soft tops sit within $6,220 of each other. The RF opens a second, higher cluster. Starting MSRP before destination, checked October 2026.

The 2026 Miata comes with two roofs and seven price points. The soft top is offered in Sport, Club and Grand Touring trims. The RF, the power-folding hardtop, comes in Grand Touring and Club. Every US car gets the same 2.0-liter engine, so the price ladder buys equipment, not power.

Mazda prices the Miata before delivery, taxes and fees. According to Mazda USA (2026 MX-5 Miata model page, 2026), the Sport starts at $30,730. The Club starts at $34,230 and the Grand Touring at $36,030. Each one adds a $1,315 destination charge ($1,360 in Alaska). The cheapest new Miata therefore costs $32,045 before your state takes its share.

Read the table from left to right and one thing stands out. The jump from Sport to RF Club is $11,470. That is more than a decent used NB costs on its own. Is the RF on your list? Our Miata RF buyer’s guide covers the roof, its known faults and its used values.

What each step up the trim ladder costs

The trim ladder is easier to judge as a series of steps than as a list of totals. Each step answers a different question, and each has its own price step.

  • Sport to Club: $3,500. This is the step toward a sharper driving car.
  • Club to Grand Touring: $1,800. This is the step toward comfort, and the only route to an automatic.
  • Grand Touring soft top to RF Grand Touring: $2,720. This is the price of the power hardtop.
  • RF Grand Touring to RF Club: $3,450. This adds the performance hardware to the hardtop.

Seen this way, the most expensive decision is not the RF roof. It is the jump from Sport to Club. Our trim-by-trim equipment breakdown lives in the Miata guide linked at the top of this page.

The options that move the sticker

Two options move the sticker most. The first is premium paint. Mazda’s own example shows a Grand Touring at $36,625 in Machine Gray, against $36,030 in a standard color. A Club in Aero Gray lists at $34,825. The premium paint therefore adds $595.

The second is the performance package on the Club. Kelley Blue Book listed the Brembo BBS Recaro package at $5,050 when 2026 pricing came out in January. It brings BBS wheels, Brembo brakes and Recaro seats. On the RF Club, the package comes standard.

Profile type: a buyer orders a Club with the package for a car that will never see a track. The brakes are superb, but the street rarely asks for them. That $5,050 could instead cover tires, an alignment and a track day. Spend it on the driving you will actually do.

Why the price moved twice in 2026

The 2026 Miata did not keep one price all year. In January, The Drive reported a Sport at $30,430 plus destination, $31,665 in total. That was $600 more than the 2025 car. The outlet tied the rise to tariffs, since Mazda builds the Miata in Japan.

By October, Mazda USA listed the same Sport at $30,730, with destination up to $1,315. The delivered price of the cheapest Miata rose by another $380 during the model year. A quote you saw in spring may not match today’s window sticker. Always ask for the current figure.

From Sticker to Driveway: Your Out-the-Door Miata Price

MSRP is line one.

Build the out-the-door price you will actually sign for, line by line.

Doc fee and registration start at $0. Add your dealer’s figure and your state’s DMV cost for a complete total.

Estimated out-the-door

$39,679

That is $3,649 over the sticker you saw.

Biggest line after the car: sales tax.

Example values: Grand Touring manual, Texas rate. Tax rules on destination, fees and trade-ins vary by state. This estimate taxes the vehicle, options, destination and dealer adjustment. Prices checked October 2026, package price as listed by Kelley Blue Book in January 2026. Not a dealer quote.

Dealers advertise MSRP. You pay the out-the-door price. That second figure adds everything required to drive away legally. It includes destination, sales tax, title, registration and the dealer's documentation fee. It may also include add-ons you never asked for.

The calculator above does the math for any 2026 trim. Pick a trim, a paint and the package, then enter your state's rate. It returns the total and shows where every dollar goes. Change one input and watch which line moves most. In the Texas example, it is the tax.

Sales tax: three states, three different bills

There is no national rule here. Each state sets its own vehicle tax, and some add local rates on top. Three examples show how wide the spread can be.

    • Texas charges 6.25 percent of the sales price, minus any trade-in allowance. That is the motor vehicle sales tax, per the Texas Comptroller.
    • California applies a statewide base rate of 7.25 percent, according to the CDTFA. District taxes can push the rate higher depending on where you live.
    • Oregon works differently. A vehicle privilege tax of 0.5 percent applies to taxable vehicles sold by dealers, per the Oregon Department of Revenue.

On a $37,345 Grand Touring, that spread is real money. The tax tied to the same car is under $200 at Oregon's rate. At California's base rate, it passes $2,700. Check your own state's revenue or DMV site before you set a budget. A rate from a forum thread is not good enough.

Trade-in: a tax detail many buyers miss

In some states, your trade-in also lowers your tax bill. The Texas Comptroller states that the 6.25 percent applies to the sales price minus any trade-in allowance. Trading in a $10,000 car at the dealer would cut the taxable amount by the same $10,000.

That can change the math of selling privately. A private sale may bring a higher price for your old car, but you lose the tax credit. Rules differ from state to state, so check yours before you choose.

Fees you can question, and fees you cannot

Title and registration fees are set by your state. You cannot negotiate them, but you can check them on your DMV site. The amounts differ from one state to the next.

The documentation fee is different. The dealer sets it, so it can differ from one dealer to the next. Ask for it in writing before you visit. Then compare it across dealers, because it is part of the real price.

Dealer add-ons deserve the closest look. Protection packages and other extras sometimes appear on a quote already printed. Ask which items are optional. If an add-on is pre-installed and non-removable, treat it as part of the car's price and negotiate the total.

Dealer markup, discount or last year's car?

MSRP means manufacturer's suggested retail price. The word that matters is suggested. Mazda's own pricing notes say the actual dealer price will vary. Some cars sell above sticker, others below. Only written quotes show where a given car stands.

iSeeCars also lists invoice prices, the figure on the dealer's invoice from Mazda. For the 2026 Sport, it shows $29,962, or $768 under MSRP. Use it as a reference point in the conversation, not as a price to demand.

Leftover cars are the third path. iSeeCars lists the 2025 Sport at $29,830 MSRP, $900 under the 2026 car. A leftover 2025 can make sense if the dealer still has one. The car is mechanically the same generation, and the lower sticker also lowers the tax.

Buyers shaking hands with a salesperson at a Mazda dealership, red Miata on the showroom floor
The handshake comes after the itemized quote, not before.

Classic scenario: a buyer in California sees the $30,730 Sport and budgets $31,000. Add destination and the statewide base tax, and the total passes $34,000. Registration and the doc fee still come after that. The car was never too expensive. The budget was simply built on the wrong number.

Three tools to get your real number

    1. Run the calculator above with your exact trim, options and tax rate. It gives you a target before any dealer conversation.
    2. Ask two or three dealers for an itemized out-the-door quote by email. Written numbers are easy to compare, and they stop surprise lines at signing.
    3. Check your state's revenue or DMV site for the exact tax rate and registration fees. Then plug them back into the calculator.

Base MSRP of the cheapest trim, per iSeeCars price pages for each model year, checked October 2026. Older years may differ slightly from launch prices quoted elsewhere. Hagerty, for example, gives the 1990 car's sticker as $13,800.

The trend is up, as expected, with one exception worth noticing. The first NC Miata in 2006 started below the last NB of 2005. Mazda launched a new generation for less money. That pattern helps explain why the NC still feels like good value. Our NC Miata buyer's guide explains what that third generation does well today.

Four Miata generations, NA, NB, NC and ND, lined up on a coastal road at sunset
NA, NB, NC and ND: four generations, four price eras.

The NA rose fastest in its own lifetime, by about $3,000 in four years. Part of that came from exchange rates, as Japanese imports grew more expensive in the 1990s. Today the price story of that first car has flipped completely. Our NA Miata buyer's guide covers what an original now costs to own.

Adjusted for inflation, is today's Miata the cheapest ever?

Nominal prices tell only half the story, so Hagerty ran the numbers in today's money. According to Hagerty (The Base Price of Every Miata, Adjusted for Inflation, 2025), NA and NB peaked above $39,000. That is in 2025 dollars. Since 2022, a new ND has cost less in real terms than every previous Miata. The car that looks most expensive on paper is the cheapest one ever sold.

Hagerty, the base price of every Miata adjusted for inflation

That reframes the whole debate. Complaining that the Miata now costs over $30,000 misses the point. In real terms, the 2026 car costs less than the NA and NB did at their peak. And it is a far more modern car for the money.

Miata vs GR86 and BRZ: Is It Still the Cheapest Way In?

    $770

That is all that separates the cheapest Miata from the cheapest GR86.Base MSRP, checked October 2026. Bars to scale from $0 to $40,000.

    Mazda Miata Sport$30,730
    Roof: opens. 181 hp.
    Toyota GR86 (2027)$31,500
Roof: fixed. 228 hp, per Toyota.
    Subaru BRZ$36,140
    Roof: fixed.
Verdict: within $1,000, price stops being the reason. The roof and how you will use the car decide.

The Miata has two obvious rivals at this price, the Toyota GR86 and the Subaru BRZ. Both are coupes. Neither has a folding roof.

At the bottom of the market, the gap is almost nothing. According to Toyota (GR86 model page, 2026), the 2027 GR86 starts at $31,500 base MSRP. Subaru (BRZ model page, 2026) lists the BRZ from $36,140 MSRP. All three are base figures. Subaru and Mazda both state that theirs exclude destination.

    Toyota, GR86 and Subaru, BRZ

So the Miata stays the cheapest of the three, by $770 over the GR86. That is not a meaningful saving on its own. The real price argument lies elsewhere. The Miata is the only one of the three you can drive with the roof down. And Toyota quotes 228 hp for the GR86's 2.4-liter engine, against the Miata's 181 hp.

Red ND Miata parked next to a blue Subaru BRZ on a mountain road
Roadster or coupe: at this price gap, the roof decides more than the sticker.

Case study: a buyer cross-shops a Miata Club and a GR86 on price alone. The coupe offers more power for similar money. The Miata offers an open roof. Price does not decide that comparison. How you plan to use the car does.

Our editorial view: once two cars sit within $1,000 of each other, the sticker stops being a reason. Drive both on the same day, then buy the one you keep thinking about on the way home.

What Is a Miata Worth Later? Resale and the Auction Market

    2024$15,700average price

One dot is about 30 cars offered. Under 300 in 2020, nearly 900 in 2024.

The purchase price is only half of what a car costs you. The other half is what you get back when you sell. On that second number, the Miata's resale value holds up well.

New cars usually lose value fast in their first years. According to iSeeCars (2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Price, 2026), the Miata keeps 70.3 percent of its value after five years. Its average five-year-old price sits around $25,479. A buyer who sells after five years recovers a large share of the money.

iSeeCars, 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata price and resale value

That resale strength changes how you should read the sticker. If the retained share stays similar across trims, a pricier car also returns more dollars later. The net cost gap between trims is then smaller than the sticker gap. Planning to buy nearly new instead? Our ND Miata buyer's guide explains the ND1 and ND2 split behind those used values.

What five years of ownership costs in value

Here is a simple illustration based on the iSeeCars figure. Take a 2026 Sport at its $30,730 MSRP. At 70.3 percent retained value, it would be worth about $21,600 after five years.

That is a loss of roughly $9,100, or about $1,800 a year. Mileage, condition and records will move your own result. Treat it as an order of magnitude for depreciation, not a promise.

Older Miatas: a market that keeps growing

The collector side of the market has grown quickly. According to Hagerty (Cars You Should Know: Mazda Miata, 2025), fewer than 300 Miatas went to auction in 2020. Their average price was $13,000. In 2024, nearly 900 were offered, at an average of $15,700. The number of cars offered tripled while the auction average climbed.

Hagerty, Cars You Should Know: Mazda Miata

The same Hagerty report names the most valuable Miata in its price guide. It is a 1996 or 1997 car in condition 1, the best in the world, valued at $41,700. That figure applies to perfect cars only. A tired NA with rust and a ripped top lives in a very different market.

Red NA Miata stored in a private garage beside shelves of documents and models
Condition and records set an older Miata's price long before its age does.

Textbook case: a buyer pays a premium for a 1990 car, convinced that Miata prices only go up. Two years later, the floor pans need work. The auction averages rose, but this car's condition fell. Prices follow condition first and age second.

Three Price Mistakes That Cost Miata Buyers Money

YOUR MIATA QUOTE Sport MSRP$30,730 Premium paint$595 Package? Destination$1,315 Sales taxstate Doc fee, titledealer, DMV TOTALthe real price 1 2

Three ways a good Miata becomes a bad deal

Budgeting the stickerOnly the first line of the quote. Fix: plan from the out-the-door total.
    • 2
Paying for unused hardwarePackage, roof or paint chosen by rank, not by use. Fix: decide how you drive first.
    • 3
Buying an old car as an investmentTop values belong to perfect cars. Fix: buy to drive, treat gains as a bonus.
MX5Global view: the cheapest Miata is the one whose total you knew before you signed.

Most overpaid Miatas are not bad deals on the day. They become bad deals because one number was missing from the buying plan. Three mistakes explain how that happens.

Mistake 1: budgeting the sticker instead of the total

The advertised price is the start of the bill, not the end. Destination is mandatory on every new Miata. Sales tax applies in most states. Registration is mandatory everywhere.

Service records, inspection reports and a Mazda key on a wooden table
The real price lives on paper: quotes, fees and records, line by line.

Build your budget from the out-the-door figure, then work back to the car you can afford. The calculator earlier on this page gives you that figure in a minute.

Mistake 2: paying for hardware your driving will never use

The most expensive trims are not always the best value. The package, the RF roof and premium paint each add real money. They each make sense for a specific buyer. They make no sense when chosen because they sit at the top of the list. Decide how you will drive the car first, then pick the right trim.

Mistake 3: treating an older Miata as an investment

Rising auction averages make old Miatas look like safe money. They are not. Values at the top concern exceptional cars with full records. An average driver-grade car can cost more in repairs than it ever gains in value. Buy a Miata to drive it, and treat any gain as a bonus.

    Shopping used instead

Is that asking price fair? Check it before you call the seller.

Check an asking price in three steps

The Real Miata Price Is the One You Calculated

Walk in with your number, not theirs.

    Bring these four things

    • Your out-the-door estimate from the calculator
    • A written, itemized quote from a competing dealer
    • Your state's exact tax rate and registration cost
    • The short list of options you will actually use
4Cost lines the sticker leaves out: destination, tax, doc fee, registration
2 to 3Written dealer quotes to compare before you sign anything

A Miata has never been cheaper in real terms than it is today. That is the good news. The catch is that the sticker hides at least $1,315, and often several thousand dollars, of extra cost. Destination, tax, paint and fees make the difference.

Walk into the dealer with your own out-the-door number. Bring a written quote from a competitor. Know which options you need and which ones you are paying for out of habit. That preparation is worth more than any haggling trick.

Red ND Miata driving along a winding coastal road at sunset
Get the number right once, and the rest is just driving.

And remember the second half of the equation. Five years on, an average Miata still keeps most of its value. The price you pay today is partly a deposit on the price you get back later. That makes it a smart purchase when the total is right.

    Next step

Is your budget pointing toward an older Miata instead?

Settle the NA vs NB question before you shop

Your Most Common Questions About Miata Price

Does an automatic Miata cost more than a manual?

Yes. A six-speed manual is standard across the range, and the automatic Miata is offered only on Grand Touring trims. It adds $920 to the soft top and $970 to the RF, at October 2026 prices. The automatic makes sense if your daily drive is mostly stop-and-go traffic. Otherwise, the manual is the cheaper choice, and the only one below Grand Touring.

Can you buy a new Miata below MSRP?

Sometimes, but nothing guarantees it. MSRP is only a suggested price, and Mazda states that the actual dealer price will vary. Your best leverage is a written out-the-door quote from more than one dealer. Ask specifically about previous-year leftovers, which carry a lower sticker. Get every quote in writing, with the out-the-door total on its own line.

Is it cheaper to buy a Miata in another state?

Rarely on tax. You generally pay vehicle tax where you register the car, not where you buy it. Texas, for example, charges its 6.25 percent use tax on vehicles residents bring in, with credit for tax paid elsewhere. Oregon applies its 0.5 percent use tax to dealer purchases made out of state. Any real saving comes from the car's price itself, minus your travel and shipping costs.

What is the cheapest way into a Miata today?

A used car. The NB Miata has the lowest entry point of the four generations. Even the newest NB is now more than twenty years old. Rust decides whether a cheap one stays cheap. Our NB Miata buyer's guide shows which years to target and where rust hides. Budget for an inspection on top of the price, whatever the generation.

Will the next-generation Miata cost more?

Nobody knows yet, because Mazda has not published a price. As of October 2026, Mazda USA still lists only the 2026 car. Any figure you read for the next Miata is a forecast, not a fact. History offers one useful hint. The 2006 NC launched below the last NB, so a new generation does not automatically mean a higher sticker.
